UAE employees must work two hours overtime when asked

January 27, 2023

Employers can ask their employees work up to two hours overtime a day, making the total number of work 144 hours within 3 weeks, said the Ministry of Human Resources in a tweet.

The ministry said that these requests are according to the Labour Relations Law and its executive regulations, however, “they need to take into consideration conditions explained in this post,” they said. The ministry said in the post that overtime work can exceed two hours per day, in the case to avoid “any loss or incidents or to eliminate or mitigate its effect”.

The law statesthat regular working hours are eight hours per day, or 48 hours per week. According to it, commuting time from and to the workplace is excluded from these working hours, except in certain cases and within controls specified in the implementing regulations.

The law also states that working hours are specified in the employment contract for non full-time work patterns. Nonetheless, that working hours shall not exceed five consecutive hours, without a minimum one-hour break.
