Oman is looking at employment in areas of data analysis, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, robotics engineering, 3D printing, alternative energy engineering, said a member of the Shura council as reported by Times of Oman.

Sheikh Sultan bin Humaid Al Hosani, a member of the Youth and Human Resources Committee of the Shura Council said, “There are many future specialisations that should be adopted in Oman.”

He was referring to data analysts, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, robotics engineering, 3D printing, alternative energy engineering, and others, as they are among the future professions.

“As we keep pace with the fourth and fifth industrial revolutions, we have to realize that it is important and necessary for us to work on preparing national cadres capable of practicing such future professions, and to stay away from graduating cohorts of job seekers in the same specializations that the labor market could not absorb,” said Sheikh Hosani.

“We have to believe that there are many specializations in the Sultanate that have expired with the passage of time, according to international reports. For example, the Economic Forum (in Davos) in 2021 on future jobs indicated that by 2025 around 85 million jobs would disappear,” he added.

The parliament member said that it is vital for the Ministry of Labour to believe that its role and duty is to regulate the labour market.

“On the other hand, there are other agencies that must carry out their roles and duties in the matter of providing job opportunities,” referring to The Ministry of Economy.

“Because of course, whenever there is growth in the economic aspect in the Sultanate, the inevitable and natural result will be the generation of job opportunities,” he added.
