Even though HR is increasingly seen as being strategically important, many companies do not have an HR representative on the Board, which is particularly evident in the Middle East. In part, this is historical as HR is seen as being ‘administrative’ and detached from the business decisions. While there are some senior HR people on the Boards in the Middle East, a lot are still trying to get acceptance for the role and value they add.

The challenge is that HR needs to establish its credibility. This can be done in various ways, mainly by understanding the company’s business drivers and show how HR can add value and be seen as a strategic partner, while making sure they influence key figures on the Board to help them get there.
